Big Camel Race - Brighton Optimist Club

Throughout the years, Bob Smith has introduced us to the activities of the Brighton Optimist Club, of which he a very active long time member. Bob has used the Preview Properties truck to move camels and, in fact, last year he sheltered a few camels in our building for a few days. It was intriguing and Preview Properties.com asked how we could help. So this year we sponsored a camel for the Big Race. Proceeds from the Big Camel Race are used to sponsor the Free Fishing Derby for Kids, an Oratorical contest for Brighton students, and a Spring Break Fun Day among other activities that come up from time to time.

Terri Weisman of Mortgage One, and also our resident decorator, organized the camel decorating. Preview Properties.com chose a theme of Route 66 embellished with 50’s candy. With bright blue eyes, cowboy hat and boots, hairy legs, and a map with a road leading one across the western United States to key attractions along Route 66, our camel stood out among the many “girls” dressed in poodle skirts. The camels race six at a time to the toss of the dice. First camel to cross the finish line wins. Besides Bob and Janice Smith who were at hard a work organizing the evening, Sandy and Rick Kretzschmar, Mary Jo Zurawski, and Nancy Bohlen were in attendance to cheer on Preview’s camel And cheer we did, as our camel won both of his races. Being new to camel races, the betting took a minute to figure out, but after the payout on the first race, we were onto the benefits of betting. Fortunately, our camel came through for us. It was a fun night and next years’ event is already scheduled for February 2, 2013 --- the theme being Hawaii.

Special thanks to all of you who helped with the decorating of the camel - we found out glue and sugar make a messy combo!

  1. I was wondering why Terri had a 10 pound pile of candy on her desk last week!? Great job Terri (I particularly liked his boots) and thanks Bob for all the activities you help the Optimist Club put on in our community! You guys are awesome!
